How Do Continuing Education Credits for a CPA license Relate to Those Required for SDBL Certification?
CPE (State term for Continuing Professional Education) is for CPA's only. Requirements for CPE are determined by the New York State Board for Public Accountancy.
CE (Continuing Education) credits is the NYSASBO term for professional development for people who need continuing education credits to keep a certification like an SDBL. These credits do not count towards the goal of attaining an SDBL for the first time in any way.
NYSASBO is only approved by the state to offer CPE credits for a narrowly defined set of topics. These topics include accounting, auditing, taxation, advisory services and specialized knowledge and applications related to specialized industries.
Matt Darius is the CPE Coordinator for NYSASBO and as the coordinator makes the determination of whether or not a session is eligible for CPE credit. NYSASBO is VERY strict on what we approve for CPE as the State is very serious about not offering credits for topics that fall outside of our approved list.
All our other educational offerings provide continuing education credits good towards your SDBL continuing education plan. A person's continuing education plan is usually created or approved by a person's superintendent. Whether or not credits from a NYSASBO event qualify for that plan is up to a person's superintendent (typically).
Every NYSASBO event provides CE credit. Many events like the conference, SBMW, and FMAA also offer CPE credits for certain sessions. Those sessions are providing an attendee both CE and CPE credits. In these instances, persons that have both a CPA and an SDBL can use a single credit to satisfy both requirements. It is important to note, however, that CPE and CE credits are not interchangeable. They are two different credits to meet requirements of two different and separate systems.
