School Business Matters: Chancellor Stepping Down

By Deborah Cunningham posted 10-26-2015 13:36

Merryl Tisch, Chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents, announced this morning that she will be stepping down from the Board of Regents at the end of her term in March 2016.  Regents are elected by the New York State Legislature and the Chancellor is selected by the members of the Board of Regents.  Both her five year term as Chancellor and her three-year term as Regent are up in March 2016.  Some speculation has been voiced about the need to rebrand the common core reform effort with a new face and look.   We will listen and watch the board during the next several months to see who emerges as a contender to be the next Chancellor of the Board of Regents.

I would think that Vice Chancellor Bottar would be the odds on favorite. His term as Regent is also up, though, in March 2016. I've seen no indications that he wouldn't want to be re-appointed to the Board again clearing the way for him to take over as Chancellor. Of course, with all the intrigue surrounding the past couple nominating processes, it's hard to have any idea what is going to happen.
