Certificated business officials and teachers must register with SED beginning July 1, 2016 and comply with professional development requirements

New requirements enacted with the laws of 2015 require all certificate holders to register with the State Education Department.  The Regents promulgated regulations in March 2016 which detail the process.  This applies to any holder of a certificate that is valid for life (Permanent, Professional and Teaching Assistant Level III) and includes the establishment of continuing teacher and leader education (CTLE) requirements for Professional and Teaching Assistant Level III Certificate Holders.  For more information click here.

I am getting some questions about this and will answer them here. If you have a question, please ask it here or send it to dcunningham@nysasbo.org.
1. Do SBAs and SDAs need to register?
Yes. SBAs and SDAs are permanent certificate holders. All permanent, professional (e.g., SDBLs) and Teaching Assistant Level III certificate holders must register with SED after 7/1/16 in their birth month.
2. Do SBAs and SDAs need to complete professional development hours?
A. No. Permanent certificate holders such as SBAs and SDAs do not have to complete the 100 hours of professional development that professional and Teaching Assistant Level III certificate holders must complete over five years?
3. How has the professional development requirement changed?
A. It is reduced from 175 hours over five years to 100 hours over five years for professional certificate holders. The 100-hour professional development requirement has been added for Teaching Assistant Level III certificate holders.
